The concept behind the punch in/punch out recording technique is relatively simple. When you have an almost perfect take but there are a couple of wrong notes here or there, why should you re-record the whole thing again when technology allows you to focus on the “offending” passages by starting and stopping the recording right when you need it.
Back in the days, using this technique was pretty risky because it meant you had to overwrite whatever you had previously tracked. Fortunately, nowadays every DAW worthy of the name comes with a much more simpler punch in/punch out function.

Free Vocal Doubler VST/AU Plugin Released By iZotope
iZotope has introduced Vocal Doubler, a freeware vocal doubling effect in VST, VST3, AU, and AAX plugin formats for compatible digital audio workstations on PC and Mac.
Vocal Doubler sports a modern-looking user interface with a simple control scheme. While the user interface isn’t resizable, it is large enough for comfortable use on high-resolution screens. After testing Vocal Doubler, my impression was that moderate amounts of stereo separation and modulation worked the best for doubling lead vocals. The doubling effect sounds convincing and natural with just the right amount of pitch drifting when the modulation amount is set to around 50%.

The two mic inputs use XLR combo jacks and have Hi/Lo-Z input switch, 130Hz HPF switch, signal and peak LEDs, and a volume control. The front panel also contains a slot for a micro-SD card, with a red record button and LED, a stop button, and forward and back buttons to move between files.
