A preamplifier has one fundamental job: to increase gain — taking a weak signal and boosting it up to a line-level signal. Upgrading your preamp has some benefits such as the sweetening effect of classic components, the added clarity of low distortion, and the increased dynamic range of high headroom circuitry.
However, let it be known that a preamp isn’t a magic bullet that will fix all your audio issues. As a matter of fact, it won’t solve any problem you have with your sound. A preamp only enhances what you already have.
