Reverb can put a vocal in a multitude of distinct spaces, but your choice of space and how you lay down the parameters will dramatically affect the mood of the track. Most contemporary reverb plugins have a handful of algorithms along with tons of modifiable parameters.
The nature of the song as well as the tempo dictates the choices you make. Professional mix engineers would tell you to build your mix around the lead vocal. As a general rule, you don’t want your reverb tails ringing over into the singer’s next phrase. Excess reverb “wash”, can cause your mix to sound muddy and the lyrics indistinct.
