Anybody who understand mixing knows that compression can be quite a heavy thing to understand. But once you get to know it, you get the hang of it and things can get better from there. So this is how compression in general works, think of it as 2 circuits namely processor and detector.
The processor effects the signal while the detector tells it how to act. Simply put it the compressor splits the signal and sends it to both.
