The Cardioid Microphone
Cardioid means “heart-shaped”, which usually picks up sound from the front, and to a lesser degree at the sides as well. It is used to emphasize sound from the direction the mic is pointed while some are left for movement of the mic and ambient noise.

It’s no secret that anyone can record audio these days – with Garage Band coming standard with Macs and other cheap (and free!) recording software that is really amazingly capable, barriers to entry are super low. That isn’t necessarily a bad thing either. Quite the opposite, in my opinion.
