Using Microphone Polar Patterns

In this article, Bjorn reviews some of the basics of microphone polar patterns and how to use them to your advantage when recording.  As a quick review, the basic polar patterns - sometimes (and more accurately, in my opinion) called pick-up patterns are:

Cardioid

Bi-directional (sometimes called figure-8)

Omni-directional

Bjorn theorizes that use of the polar/pick-up pattern in audio recording may be the most under-utilized mic technique.  Most people understand that an omni-directional pattern would be great for setting up in the middle of a group so as to pick up everyone around it equally.  But how can it be bad for adding noise?  Did you know there is no proximity effect with "omni?"
