EQ Or Compression First?

When recording a multitrack music project, there are several points in the process where you apply equalization (EQ) and/or compression.  You can put an EQ or compressor on each individual track, a sub-group of tracks, or to the master mix bus.  Then of course, once you have a mixed-down stereo track, you can (and usually do) apply  both EQ and compression.

One oft-posed question is which one should come first.  Should you EQ the compressed file (compression came first), or compress the EQ'd file (EQ first)?

Here is an article that gives a few tips to help answer this perennial question.
